I agree with Paul that personal relationships have a greater effect on overall happiness. A successful career can provide money and pride, but it cannot replace emotional support from family and friends. During illness, job loss, or other difficult times, people usually turn to those they trust rather than to their workplace. Strong relationships also create simple daily joys, such as sharing a meal or talking about a problem. Careers can change, and people eventually retire, but close connections may last for life. Claire is right that meaningful work brings satisfaction; however, professional success may feel empty without anyone to share it with. For most people, caring relationships are the stronger and more lasting source of happiness.
