I agree with Paul that cities can create strong new forms of community. Urban areas bring together people from many cultures, jobs, and age groups. Residents can join sports teams, religious groups, volunteer projects, or clubs based on almost any interest. This variety helps people find others who truly understand them, even if they do not live next door. Public transportation and shared spaces also make regular meetings possible. Claire is right that some city residents feel isolated, but isolation is not an unavoidable result of urbanization. Local governments can support safe parks, libraries, and neighborhood events. In my view, cities do not destroy community; they change it from one based mainly on location to one based on shared interests.
