I agree with Paul that space colonization deserves serious investment. Earth may face major dangers in the future, including climate change, water shortages, and natural disasters. A human settlement on another planet could give our species an important backup plan. In addition, space research often produces useful technology. For example, better systems for saving water and growing food in space could also help communities on Earth. Kelly is right that our present problems are urgent, but scientific funding is not a fixed choice between Earth and space. Governments can protect the environment while supporting long-term research. In my view, preparing for the future is responsible, even if the benefits take many years to appear.
