I agree with Kelly that we should focus most of our resources on improving conditions on Earth. Space colonization is extremely expensive, and it may take hundreds of years before ordinary people can live safely on another planet. Meanwhile, many communities already lack clean water, food, and reliable energy. Money spent on renewable power, public transportation, and better farming could improve millions of lives now. Paul’s backup-plan idea is interesting, but another planet would not be a realistic home for most of humanity. We already have a habitable planet, so protecting it should be our first responsibility. In short, solving urgent environmental problems on Earth is more practical, fair, and useful than planning distant colonies.
